22:45 Sunday.
The closing ceremony of HIP97 has just ended. While the camping fields were less then half full, indicating at least half of the HIPpers had left, the circus tent was full of people listening to the final remarks of Rop and Maurice. They gave a warm applause for the volunteers who made HIP possible. The people who made the network, who set up the electricity, the people who cleaned the toilets and the people behind the bar, "those guys, animals who went on and on and on..." like Maurice said. Finally, someone in the audience shouted "and you, thank you for giving us HIP!" followed by a big applause. I couldn't get these pages of my diary online sunday evening because most parts of the network had been taken down. The base stations of the wireless ethernet for the HIPcar and my pc were packed, and at our tent there wasn't any network left because someone up the line had left and took their hub with them.

You may wonder why i haven't written much on sunday. I'll explain. First, there were more things in the program I wanted to see than the previous days. A workshop on IPv6, another on wwcn, the world wide conferencing network, which they expect will replace IRC in due time. Then there was a forum in the circus tent on information warfare, where two people of CCC and Rop in the forum. I'll tell you more about it, it was very very interesting.
Second, it was soooo hot today that those periods I wasn't in a workshop or lecture, I tried to cool down in the shade with Jolt or water. It was sooo hot. When planning this diary, I didn't know much about the setup of the conference and I didn't know where workshops and lectures would be given. I assumed I could move between tents and type while online. However, the central place was a field, one of the wireless base stations was in a tower in the middle of that field, mostly for the convenience of the HIPcar, and I couldn't use my PC outside because I couldn't see the screen there. Only in the shade, holding she screen in the right orientation, with some effort I could see the screen. Not an easy way to type. The only place where I could type online conveniently was in the HALL tent, which I did a lot. I was going to use a cable now, in our tent, but as I said there's no ethernet here any more. I'll try to ftp this piece of text tomorrow morning. I'll have to be early because the PC's have to be out of the HALL tent before 10am, and I assume the network will be broken down by that time too. If I can't do it in the HALL tent, I'll to it soon as we're home, around midday. Also, I'll add a considerable amount of text to this diary later this week. There's so much I haven't said (or written). I'll have to stop typing now, the light attracts the midges too much. CU tomorrow.
